Special Educational Needs

Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfil their potential

Our practitioners consider the individual needs, interests, and the stage of development of each child in their care, and use this information to plan a challenging and enjoyable experience for their key children. High quality teaching is based on the highest expectations for individual children, draws on what staff know about children’s learning and development, is differentiated for individual children and uses a range of pedagogic approaches.

We have an in house, designated

Level 3 SENCO

We believe in the following four principles:

 

  • Every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured;

  • Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships;

  • Children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers;

  • children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates.

Our Special Sensory Room

Sensory rooms are all about offering children rich and varied experiences which will enable children to use their senses. The benefits children relish from accessing sensory experiences are huge; it stimulates their brain, leading to vast learning opportunities.

 

Our sensory room is a great place for children to escape to and unwind from the busy nursery room. This calm and tranquil space enables children to relax and let their exploratory minds evolve.

 

As soon as babies are born they are developing their senses from day one. Therefore we have ensured our sensory room/space is tailored to children of all ages.

 

Sensory rooms are a great place to see lots of learning taking place; meaning keyworkers are able gather some wonderful detailed observations.

Some of our resources include:

 

•Different sized mirrors- mounted on the wall low down for children to look into,

 

•Sensory bottles- these are often made with the children, using old plastic bottle and filling with various items such as dried pasta, lentils etc.

 

•Treasure baskets  – filled with different textured items such as fabrics, wooden objects, metal objects.

 

•CD Player- allowing us to use a range of music to create that relaxing atmosphere.

 

•Ball Pool- creating lots of fun with different coloured and sized balls.

 

•Soft blocks- these have different textures on them which are perfect to use in our sensory room.

 

•Lights- a variety of lights eg fibre optic lights and fairy lights, helping to create that relaxing atmosphere.

 

•Pieces of different textured material

Lewisham Council Early Years Team

We are proud to be supported by a fabulous team of people at Lewisham's Early Years department. They are truly dedicated to ensuring the best possible outcomes for children within the borough and the SEN team are always on hand to offer their knowledge, guidance and support. 

We were honoured to be invited to enrol a member of our team onto Lewisham's very first COHORT of specialised Level 3 SENCO training - which has proved to be invaluable and further established the partnership between our nursery and the early years team.
